Ecotourism is a growing segment for the international travel industry and an important tourism market for many nations, including Canada. Southwestern Ontario, in particular, is well positioned to benefit from this trend, with its rich Carolinian ecosystem and diverse wildlife habitats. Among birdwatching enthusiasts, for example, Point Pelee National Park is ranked as one the top-10 destinations in North America, attracting close to 40,000 visitors each spring to watch the annual bird migrations.
To capitalize on these opportunities, Pier 8 Group, together with the Carolinian Canada Coalition and Earth Tramper Consulting, undertook a marketing study for the Southwest Ontario Tourism Corporation. As part of the project we consulted with tourism officials and birding experts, and carried out site visits to identify and rank 23 top birding locations. Our marketing strategy included recommendations for a Lake Erie Coastal Birding Trail, a regional birding website, maps, brochures and guides.
