Halton GreenCart – More Blue and Green for a Better Planet
Halton Region’s campaign to divert 60 percent of residential solid waste from the landfill got a big boost in 2008 with the introduction of a Green Cart recycling program. Creative concepts and marketing tools for the program were developed by Pier 8 Group.
The marketing theme – More Blue and Green for a Better Planet – links Green Cart recycling with the popular and already familiar Blue Box program. A friendly environmental mascot was created to help residents understand that, yes, it really is easy to be green!
When the program was rolled out in July 2008, Halton was diverting 43 percent of solid waste from the landfill. Within six months, the diversion rate had risen to 60 percent. The communications campaign
garnered several regional, national and international awards, including the coveted Golden Quill from the International Association of Business Communicators.
