Battery Recycling
Turning a negative into a positive

The safe disposal of hazardous household waste is one of the most challenging problems facing municipal recyclers. Case in point: batteries. It is estimated that more than 5,000 tonnes of alkaline batteries are sold in Ontario every year. Of this volume, only seven percent is currently recycled. The rest find their way to landfills and contribute about 88 percent of the mercury and 50 percent of the cadmium found in the municipal waste stream.

Niagara Region recently launched a program to provide residents with easy access to battery recycling facilities. The batteries collected as part of this program are shipped to a raw materials processor in Port Colborne where more than 95 per cent of the components are recycled. To promote the program, Pier 8 Group created a simple but effective brand and communication materials to tell residents how they can participate.
